My friend Rhee
Dear Friends and Readers,
Long ago when I was a cub reporter at the Mobile Register and the Mississippi Press, I worked with a reporter named Rhee Odom. Rhee was a terrific journalist. She introduced me to “the causeway” (where this story opens) and many Mobile places–some classy and some not! In many ways, “The Price of Indulgence” is an homage to Rhee and the time she put into our friendship. When she got hold of a story, she was a pit bull and never let go! She died a couple of years ago. I think she’d get a kick out of this tale.
The story came to be when I was invited to submit a story to an anthology of Alabama crime writers edited by Don Noble titled Alabama Noir. I was so honored that my story was accepted. The people included in the anthology are impressive, and every story in it is a jewel.
